Last week, Noah and I went to Kauai, Hawaii on vacation to celebrate my mother-in-law’s bday and (besides the fact that I came home with a terrible cold) we had a really lovely time. For months, it’s been raining on and off in Northern California and I was desperate for sun and warmth. This trip came at the perfect time!
The weather in April isn’t crazy hot, but it was pleasant in the high 70’s. I was happy to have lots of options and breezy layers. My bump is growing bigger everyday and I needed to be comfortable while still feeling cute 🙂 so I tried to pack a few trusty accessories and comfortable shoes.
My favorite sun hat is the Wide Brim Panama Hat from the gorgeous and affordable sustainable brand, Cuyana. If you don’t know them, check ’em out they have so many great pieces for travel. I brought it all over Greece and it has the perfect width of brim to keep the hot sun off my shoulders. My favorite Arizona Big Buckle “Butter” Birkenstocks were my trusty sandals most days, but I brought my Metallic Universal Tevas for any times when I want to wear sandals in the sand or near the water. And finally, I’m brought my Ancient Greek sandals for going out to lunch, etc.
A couple months ago, I purchased one of Ulla Johnson’s Cari cover-ups. The Jasmine print is so lovely and looks like an Indonesian batik print in cream and blue. It’s slightly sheer and has a dramatic low back. I also got the matching Akami Maillot! Because the straps in the back are adjustable, I’m hoping it can go further into pregnancy with me. I will say that the swimsuit I wore the most was the Robin Piccone Ava Plunge – I just sized up a couple sizes to fit the bump!
We flew Hawaiian Airlines, through Honululu to Lihue Airport on Kauai. My mother-in-law booked our accommodations through a family time share at the Marriott Waiohai Beach Vacation club. Even though usually I’m a boutique hotel or Airbnb traveler, it was fun to try out this experience.
I loved having a bar right on the beach – easy access to piña coladas! And, there were communal grills which made dinner super easy. (The food on Kauai isn’t great, except for a couple spots I’ll tell you about below!)
THE MUSUBI TRUCK 4548 Kukui St, Kapaʻa, HI 96746
JOJO SHAVED ICE 4-484 Kuhio Hwy, Kapaʻa, HI 96746
HAMURA SAIMI STAND at the night market on Kress St in Lihue (Malasadas are a must-try for any visitor to the island!) There is also a restaurant which we didn’t go to, but we grabbed donuts to go at the stand during the market.
RIPTIDES SHAED ICE 5021 Lawai Rd, Koloa, HI 96756 (I got the organic coconut and pineapple on top of ice, on top of macadamia nut ice cream).
WAIMEA CANYON STATE PARK Drive up to the top and do the touristy thing and check out the overlook, the view is pretty amazing!
THE SHRIMP STATION 9652 Kaumualii Hwy, Waimea, HI 96796 If you are looking for a place to eat lunch, try out coconut shrimp and the garlic shrimp – both were surprisingly good.
COCONUT CORNER HI-50, Waimea, HI 96796 I grabbed cut mango from the cold case which I really needed to fix a craving and I wanted to grab a smoothie, too!
WAREHOUSE 3540 3540 Koloa Rd, Kalaheo, HI 96741

JAPANESE GRANDMA’S CAFE 3871 Hanapepe Rd, Hanapepe, HI 96716 We had a lovely meal here in the back patio. We ordered a bunch of sushi (my first preggers splurge!) and they even had non-alc Asahi, which helped make me feel a part of the meal, they way I normally would.
KAUAI JUICE CO. 5460 Koloa Rd, Koloa, HI 96756 The next day, I needed green juice like it was my job! There is a lot of fried food on the island and not a lot of salads…period. If you are looking for a great salad try out this place – yum!
SEVEN FOUR TWO COLLECTIVE 5330 Koloa Rd # 3, Koloa, HI 96756 Cute shop with the most normal / non-islandy tourist clothes I saw on the trip!
Fish Market at THE HANALEI BAY DOLPHIN RESTAURANT 5-5016 Kuhio Hwy C, Hanalei, HI 96714 On one of our last days we drove up to Hanalei. Unfortunately, I was starting not to feel well, but we stopped for lunch at the Dolphin Restaurant and grabbed a to go lunch around the back at the Fish Market. There is a great spot to eat outside next to the river. I was able to get a roll with cooked crab (and so, pregnancy friendly!)
I get a commission for purchases made through links on this page.
Would you be able to share a more precise location of that beautiful path way that was your last picture? ive always wanted to go but cannot find it !
